Sprinkler Repair or Replacement: What to Compare
A broken sprinkler head does not automatically justify a new system. Repeated failures do not automatically mean that every underground pipe is unusable either. Compare targeted repair with replacement by asking what has failed, what can remain and whether the current layout still fits the landscape.
Separate a component fault from a design problem
A damaged nozzle, failed solenoid or broken connection can be an isolated repair. Dry corners across several zones, incompatible equipment or an undersized supply may need a wider assessment. Record which stations are affected and whether symptoms occur during manual operation as well as scheduled watering.
Look at changes to the yard
A new patio, enlarged bed or mature tree can change the useful lawn footprint. A system designed before those changes may water pavement or apply the same schedule to plants with different needs. Replacement proposals should explain the new layout rather than simply offer newer versions of all the old equipment.
Request measured findings
Pressure and flow problems need evidence. Ask how the supply, valves, nozzles and pipework were checked. A more expensive controller will not fix a split lateral. Increasing runtime will not correct a blocked emitter. The recommended work should identify the fault and the way success will be tested.
Compare scopes side by side
For each proposal, list equipment retained, equipment replaced, excavation, restoration and documentation. Confirm parts, labor, access and any separate connection or electrical requirements. Ask whether a staged repair can solve the immediate problem while leaving a later landscape redesign possible.
Include the final operating test
After repair, the affected station should be checked under normal operation. After replacement, review all stations, controller settings and sensor operation. Keep a record of what changed and why. A visible spray pattern is only part of the check; complete shutoff and absence of leaks matter too.
